What is a discrepant event???
A Discrepant event is an event that we do not expect.they are occurrences that deny our understanding of the world by presenting unexpected outcomes.
It is surprising
It amazes student because it is contrary to what they would expect to happen
It puzzles the observer and arouses curiosity.

An example of discrepant event!!
BALLOON INFLATING MAGIC!!!
This discrepant event in science will allow you to inflate a balloon WITHOUT BLOWING IT..
First, give them a flask containing some liquid(acetic acid) with a balloon attached to it [balloon contains some powder (baking soda)].
Then, ask students to lift the balloon such that powder from the balloon falls into the flask. Ask students to OBSERVE.
This occurs because, baking soda from the balloon reacts with acetic acid in the flask and liberates carbon dioxide which goes into the balloon and inflates it.
NOTE: Do not reveal the names of the powder and liquid and the reason or the science behind discrepant event first.
